Gerald Hartwig

Gerald Maurice Hartwig passed from this life Sunday, May 22, 2016, at his home. He was born Jan. 27, 1939, at the family home in Winchester, to Emil and Marjorie Roseborough Hartwig, being the last of three children. His family moved to Lewiston when he was 2 years old. Within a few years after high school, Gerald met Deanna Holliday and they were married Nov. 26, 1960. They welcomed Lee to the family in 1961 and Darrin in 1965.

Gerald worked many years at Riley's Conoco Station in the Lewiston Orchards, where Liberty Mart is currently. In the early 1970s, he began employment at Potlatch Forests Inc., and worked there for about 30 years, until his retirement.

Gerald and Deanna were always active in some local group, whether it was the Square Devils square dance group or bowling in Wednesday night's Ball and Chain league at Orchards Lanes. He also enjoyed being on a golf league for some time.

They had many wonderful friends and enjoyed spending quality time with them. They enjoyed camping and boating with the "Boat People" at Newman Lake and on the Snake River, traveling with the "Crazy Campers," and spending some winters renting a cabin at Soldier's Meadow and snowmobiling with friends and family. They also took some wonderful trips with many of their friends, traveling to Nashville, Tenn., and Hawaii, and cruising to Alaska, the Caribbean and Mexico. Deanna passed away in 2009.

Gerald always enjoyed supporting his children in their lifelong activities, and he continued this with his grandchildren in their many activities. He always enjoyed camping and continued to go with his children and their families to Redneck Camp in Elk River.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

He is survived by his brother, Leonard of Lewiston; and his sister, Lila (Ken) Hoagland of Astoria, Ore.; and his sons, Lee (Lisa) and Darrin (Sharon) Hartwig of Lewiston; and his grandchildren, Delaney (Tyler) Ball, Kaylee, CJ and Lane (Bailley) Hartwig, Ashton Kiele, Bessie (Jay) Rivera, Samantha Opdahl and Danny Gadley; along with 12 great-grandchildren.
